Present:  Sharon Faulkner (Montgomery CC), Gena Craig (CPCC), Libby Stone (Gaston),  Ruth Bryan (NCCCS System Office), Harry Cooke (Gaston), Sharon Day-Lowe (Gaston), Virginia Yandle (Stanly),  Dee Estes (Stanly), Martha Robinson (Gaston), Lynn Gambon (SPCC), Grant LeFoe (SPCC), Allen Moesteller (Cleveland CC), Amy Burns (CPCC).

The meeting opened with a welcome from Mary Chesson, Vice President of Instruction for Montogomery Community College.

President Gena Craig called the meeting to order.

Old Business:  none

New Business:

1.   Allen Moesteller mentioned that BLINC (Business Librarianship in North Carolina) is putting together a presentation on how to find business information.  He wondered if we would like to offer our next meeting as a practice session for that presentation.  Possible dates that work for our group are Friday Feb. 9 or Friday Feb. 23.  Allen will let us know which date is best for the presenters.  The group supported this as the program for our next meeting.

2.      NCCCLRA Conference will be held Tuesday March 13 – Thursday March 15 2007 at the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center. Myra Blue is Chairman for the conference; please send any presentation ideas to her.  A meeting is scheduled to finalize plans, and information should soon be on the NCCCLRA website.  There was discussion of events at past conferences that were popular, such as an evening meal/speaker and more networking opportunities in the evening.

3.      Ruth Bryan reported that there will be a CCLINC update December 14/15.  They are negotiating with OCLC for cost for 07-09.  It will be well over $100,000/year paid out of system funds, usage has increased.  Ruth reported that additional funds for books/materials have been requested again this year.  Everyone was interested to learn that the lump sum given to the State Library is portioned out to community colleges according to FTE, but the college administration ultimately decides how much goes to the library budget.  Different schools have different ways of allotting their budget.  Ruth mentioned that the Academic Library survey from the system office will be coming through email soon.

Discussion on a number of issues followed, including plagiarism detection software, computer access issues, myspace.com, book vs. print collections.

Updates:

Dr. Pearlie Brown is retiring from Gaston College after 40 years of service there.

Linda Stone is retiring from Central Carolina.

The meeting was adjourned and Sharon took the group on a tour of the campus, which ended at the pottery department.  She mentioned that the college had provided some of the pots used in the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit at Discovery Place in Charlotte earlier this year.  The group watched the firing process for raku pottery, and saw pieces the students were working on.

Respectfully submitted,

Amy Burns

Secretary, District V
