E-books in CCLINC
catalog
Pat presented summary of CCLINC policies regarding adding links to electronic books in the library catalog. CCLINC only allows links to e-books in the record of a print copy of a book held by at least one library. By contrast, libraries using the NCLITN Horizon catalog (including GTCC and Davidson CC) include direct links to over 24,000 e-books.
Discussion ensued. Everyone agreed that we would like to see e-book records in the catalog. Issues to be addressed include possibility of batch loading records, bandwidth and storage space questions, and possibility of adding links in stages. We discussed whether there could be one record for each e-book in NetLibrary or Gale Virtual Reference? Possible holdings could read “NCCCS”? Ernest is a member of the cataloging group and will discuss it with that committee. Donald will raise the issue at the next CCCLA (administrators) meeting. We will also consider sponsoring an educational session about e-books at LRA conference, which is April 2-4 in Wilkes.
Some colleges, including GTCC, are moving from Blackboard to Moodle, which is open source learning management software.
Freeware & low
cost tools for online instruction & presentations
Michael demonstrated several free software programs for creating presentations, including Webinaria, Thumbstacks, Author Point Light, Authorstream, Slideshare, and Animoto. Most have audio and flash capability and can be uploaded to public web sites.
Discussion
Gretchen reported that Piedmont CC held a vendor showcase for book and technology vendors which faculty and staff attended. They have also marketed the library through a newsletter, bookmarks, and library liaisons. GTCC libraries have a blog for staff and students using Blogspot, called “Library Services at GTCC.”
