  Book Repair

"Done properly, book repair is an effective preservation strategy that can extend the useful life of a collection and reduce replacement and binding costs."

Wednesday's session will make it clear what repairs can best be done in-house and the most practical way to develop a program within your library to do them.

Specific repairs will be demonstrated, giving participants the opportunity for hands-on practice with the most common problems.

Dr. James V. (Jim) Carmichael, Jr.

Professor of Library and Information and Library Studies at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He has published numerous articles both within and without the library field on southern library history, gender issues, and gay and lesbian issues and has most recently edited a collection of essays entitled Daring to Find Our Names: The Search for Lesbigay Library History. He is an active member of ALA and the Association for Library and Information Science Education and is a frequent speaker at various forums within both associations, and beyond.

  Basic Information Literacy in ACA 115 Study Skills

Starting Spring 2006, the library was assigned an eight-hour block of ACA 115 to teach critical thinking/information literacy skills. Topics included clustering to narrow a topic as well as evaluating books, NC LIVE resources, and web sites for research purposes. Students were given pre- and post-assessments and were required to turn in a portfolio of their work. Attend this session to learn about the structure and content of the classes as well as what was successful and what needed refinement.

  "The Accidental Library Manager" - Who Am I?

When confronting work tasks, have you ever given second thought as to why you do what you do? Well, theory and research support that all humans act and perform best when relying on their unique instinctual style. In this workshop, you'll discover the 4 "instinctual styles" individuals within a work unit employ to problem solve and accomplish work tasks. Participants will identify their instinctual makeup, then explore the implications when only one approach to "getting the job done" is embraced and supported.

Mary Boone, North Carolina State Librarian

A native of North Carolina, Ms. Boone received her BA and MSLS degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was director of the Chapel Hill (NC) Public Library from 1978 to 1985 and was a founding member of the North Carolina Public Library Directors Association. Since 1985 she has been a Foreign Service Library/Information Resource Officer with the United States Information Agency and the U.S. Department of State, with service in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Washington, DC. Her assignments included serving as the director of the Department of State's extensive international library program from 1999 to 2002 and overseeing the planning and establishment of the Jefferson Information Center, a new Department of State initiative incorporating its existing library and a new research service, from 2002 to 2005. The UNC-CH School of Information and Library Science presented her with its Distinguished Alumni Award in December 2003.
